The Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML), operated jointly by UNH and Cornell University is located on Appledore Island, seven miles off the coast of New Hampshire. SML focuses on undergraduate education in marine biology, offering over 20 summer credit courses designed especially for undergraduate students. Course topics include Field Marine Science, Marine Biology and Ecology, Field Ornithology, and Oceanography of the Gulf of Maine, to name a few.
Students from UNH, Cornell and institutions from around the country find themselves immersed in an intense learning atmosphere and a sense of community not found on dry land. Living on the island enables incredible learning experiences without the day to day distractions found on campus. Most students describe it as one of the best experiences they have had in college.
While participating students apply directly to the SML program, UNH students have unique opportunities for dedicated UNH fellowships and for application of SML courses to their degree requirements. For more information on costs and scholarships visit both the UNH and Cornell websites above. For information on the 2009 Course Offerings at SML, click here.
