For her senior honors thesis at UNH, Erin Cubley is conducting an experiment this summer to compare oyster growth and survival using two methods of placement in Berry's Brook, Rye. Her results will be useful in a larger-scale restoration of oyster reefs in the area by JEL scientists Ray Grizzle, Gregg Moore and David Burdick.

Jon Felch, a UNH graduate, is Fred Short's newest master's degree candidate. Jon is gearing up to begin studying the NH Port Authority Eelgrass Mitigation Sites in the Piscataqua River.

Jong Yu, a new graduate student pursuing a master's degree in microbiology, is working with Steve Jones in his microbiology lab. Jong will be developing a molecular-based assay to detect and quantify pathogenic vibrio strains and apply that in field samples and at Spinney Creek Shellfish Company to eliminate them from oysters. |

Giuseppe DiCarlo just arrived at JEL as Fred Short's newest postdoc. Giuseppe will be working on Fred's Global SeagrassNet program. His plans for the next year include initiate SeagrassNet activities in the Mediterranean, facilitate communications among SeagrassNet sites, develop a SeagrassNet newsletter and publish, publish, publish. |

Steve Jones has just begun a collaboration with folks at Tufts Veterinary School to see if herring gulls are transferring human pathogens to the marine environment. |

Art Mathieson is working this summer with long-time collaborator Clinton Dawes from the University of Southern Florida. Clinton is visiting JEL, as he has each summer for over a decade, to work with Art on a new book titled Seaweed Flora of the Northwest Atlantic. This book follows another book they published together in January 2008 titled Seaweeds of Florida. |

Congratulations go out to Emily Klein, graduate student in the NRESS program under the direction of Andy Rosenberg, on receiving the Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship from the NOAA National Marine Sanctuaries. This fellowship, which funds a student for four years, will allow Emily to continue her doctoral research on understanding long-term ecosystem change and historical ecology in the Gulf of Maine via time series analysis and hierarchical models. |
