On September 9, the Piscataqua River gundalow Capt. Edward Adams, a reproduction of the gundalow Fanny M., which was built and launched at Adams Point in 1886, will be making it's annual stop at Adams Point and the Jackson Estuarine Lab. The gundalow, owned by the Gundalow Company, in collaboration with other nonprofit organizations, is used to promote awareness of the maritime heritage and coastal environment of the Piscataqua River region. As part of that effort, every year the Jackson Lab hosts a talk given by one of its research faculty about the important work that goes on at the lab and its connection to the contemporary coastal issues of the region. This year Fred Short will give a talk titled: A “Pristine” Estuary in Crisis. The Great Bay Estuary is showing severe signs of stress from human impacts. Both the Piscataqua River and Little Bay have lost all of their eelgrass over the past few years and eelgrass in Great Bay is showing decline. What can be done? The talk begins at 7:00pm on board the gundalow and is open to the public. PLEASE NOTE: This has been changed to 6:00 PM!

Stacia Sower and Mike Baron (former MS student) are selecting sea lampreys from the lamprey behavior tank at UNH AFAIR, Anadromous Fish and Aquatic Invertebrate Research, Laboratory for in vivo experiments. Sea lampreys are anadromous which means the adults migrate from the ocean to freshwater streams in late May to spawn. The sea lampreys like Pacific salmon, spawn only once in their lifetime after which they die. This means that all experiments on adult sea lampreys occur once a year in May and June.
